Project Description

Located in a rural part of Klickitat County, the Wahkiacus Bridge located at Horseshoe Bend Rd across the Klickitat River near the community of Klickitat is crucial for the residents who live in the vicinity of the bridge and rely on it to access SR 142. After looking at various options to address the aging bridge, Klickitat County determined the most feasible course of action was to retrofit the existing bridge instead of replacing it with a new structure.

Work included the installation of 6’ diameter drilled shafts and cast-in-place shaft caps at both abutments directly behind the existing abutment wall. One lane of traffic was required to be maintained on SR 142 at all times which increased the difficulty of this work due to the limited access and need for large machinery to install the drilled shafts. The new shaft caps were tied to the abutments using resin-bonded rebar anchors. Other repair work included removal and replacement of the existing curb and bridge railing, installation of a high friction surface treatment on the bridge deck, replacing utility hangers and utility conduit, installing new bridge joints, repaving the asphalt approaches to the bridge, and installation of new guardrail at each end of the bridge.
